The Forbidden Library by Django Wexler

The Forbidden Library by Django Wexler
This is a fun and intriguing fantasy for kids. The ship that Alice's father is on sinks a few days after Alice sees her father speaking to an evil fairy. Alice is sent to live with an "uncle" who she had never heard of where she learns that she is a "Reader", someone with the skill to read the magic in books and enter them. However, the books that she enters are prisons and the only way out is to kill the prisoners. In the magical library filled with talking cats and moving shelves and books leaking magic, Alice must fight to save herself. The concepts in the book are rather unique and intriguing and there are plot twists and surprises. I found the ending rather unsatisfactory though. It seems to be set up to be the beginning of a series although that is not stated. I enjoyed the book and I think others will too.
